About the Author
Erik Hawkins is a musician, producer, and author whose talents and technical expertise have leaders in the music industry calling him a "taste maker." Over 100 of his articles have appeared in the industry's top publications, including Electronic Musician, Mix, Remix, MC2, and Keyboard. He has been a public relations advisor and technical writer for companies such as Tascam and Digidesign. While perfecting his engineering and production skills at Infinite Studios in Northern CA, he had the opportunity to work with artists such as Irene Cara and Digital Underground. He went on to produce many recordings out of his own studio that where featured on PBS broadcasts, and in corporate infomercials and internationally distributed sample libraries. Now he owns and operates MuziCali Intertaiment (muzicali.com), an online label dedicated to new music created with cutting edge technology.

Fabulous Forward by Frank
When I was in my early teens I remember seeing David Frank (if you don't know who Frank is, see his Digidesign Masters story) perform live with The System at the Kabuki nightclub in San Francisco. I was blown away by what he was playing on stage with his whole Oberheim system. What I saw him do at that show served as one of my biggest inspirations for learning all about electronic music instruments.

A few years back I met David Frank at an Emagic, Logic Audio new version (I think it was 4.5) release party, in Los Angeles. I was thrilled to meet him in person, and equally thrilled to find out what a genuinely nice person he is (a rare treat in this industry). We have stayed in contact since that meeting, and as he continues to serve as an inspiration for my own musical endeavors, I thought it would be great to ask him if he would contribute the forward to my book. To my thrill (again), he said, "Yes."

Frank composed a wonderful forward. And it feels really appropriate to have his voice in the beginning of Studio-In-A-Box, just as his music was there for me in the beginning of my career.
